LCA Sponsors 2023 Fairy Homes & Gardens
Lexington Council for the Arts sponsored the annual Fairy Home & Garden event on May 27, 2023 -- Discovery Day weekend. Its purpose was to bring people of all ages together as they create fairy homes and to further our sense of community through shared creativity and enjoyment of nature. Fairy Homes & Gardens, which involves many town organizations and individuals, appeals to all ages and is free to all.
Last year Lexington’s Tourism Committee and the Chamber of Commerce enthusiastically endorsed this free, family-friendly cross-town celebration. Many organizations -- including Munroe Center for the Arts, Cary Library, CAAL, Recreation and Community Programs, Lexington Community Farm, preschools -- and individuals collected their pinecones, pods, odd bits of jewelry, etc. to make their fairy houses. There was even a fairy house in the Patriots’ Day parade.
This year, LCA invited artists to create more elaborate fairy houses to decorate the Lexington environment and to hold a Fairy Scavenger Hunt.
Typically, tourists are drawn to Lexington for our historical attractions. However, with projects like this and the Town’s ongoing application to create a cultural district, we aim to make Lexington known for arts and culture as well. Fairy Homes & Gardens encourages not only its residents but visitors from other towns to visit Lexington, to walk through its many parks along Massachusetts Ave, and enjoy this historic town.
LCA hopes to engage as many individuals and groups as possible in the fun and creativity of building fairy homes! We invite you to join us for next year's event.

Fairy Homes and Gardens: LexingtonWHY FAIRIES?
We like the theme of fairy homes and gardens because it emphasizes being one with nature, using our imagination, and reusing things. This would be a large-scale community event introducing our various organizations to Lexington residents and visitors. The benefit is friend-raising more than fundraising as costs would be minimal and easily recuperable. Groups will develop ideas, source materials, and determine a site in the spring of 2022, then spend the week of June 6 actually creating fairy houses and engaging the community with lead-up programming. For example, the Lexington Field & Garden Club could create fairy houses in the historic house gardens and other civic gardens, and offer an illustrated talk. The Green Network and its many groups could discuss and encourage recycling in creating fairy homes. Cary librarians could help children create fairy houses from Legos, tell fairy stories, and encourage youth to write their own. LexArt guilds could create houses from clay, fiber, or wood. The list is only limited by the imagination! |
