People ask what are utility boxes. Utility boxes sit on street corners, sidewalks, and parks, holding all the equipment that keeps a town ticking. They hold traffic light controls, cable connections, electric transformers and more.

Located in different neighborhood districts, these painted boxes contribute to the vitality and attractiveness of the streetscape. Four of the newly painted boxes are at the recreation areas (Center Recreation Complex and Lincoln Park) and five are at street locations: Waltham & Marrett, Waltham & Worthen,  and three on Bedford Street. Some have been completed, some are still in the middle of being painted. Resident Betsy Pollack comments, "Thank you for your creativity and brightening up an otherwise mundane route through town."

Sarah Scoville, the artist for the flower box at the corner of Marrett Rd and Waltham St.) says, "I painted it for the smile. As people rush through their day, pausing at a light in Marrett Square, they can look over, and get a burst of color and joy to brighten their day."

The Lexington Council for the Arts (LCOA) determined that this town needed something bright and fun loving on our streets. Working with Laurie Bogdan, collage artist and art curator, it kicked off a utility box painting project to transform some of the town’s utility boxes into unique works of art.

Laurie comments, "Working with local artists to turn these utility boxes into colorful public art has been exciting. My hope is that the Lexington community, both residents and visitors, enjoy this collaborative effort as much as we have in creating it."

"Painting next to the playground, I was the happy recipient of so many nice comments from passing kids and parents. Many kids came and told me how much they liked it, or that they like doing art too, or which sport they like best! I'm really pleased to be adding something fun and colorful to their day, and their experience of the park!"
