Ode to E.O

E.O. Wilson, acclaimed biologist and naturalist, is a long-time Lexington resident originally from Alabama. The door is a metaphor for the choices that we face - the promise of conservation or the grim prospect of extinction.

E.O. Wilson, the acclaimed biologist and naturalist, lived in Lexington. He grew up in Alabama in the 1930s, a soft-spoken southerner who spent his childhood outdoors observing nature.  He became a world-renowned scientist at Harvard who studied ant colonies and insect behavior. He founded the field of sociobiology and has written extensively about the effects of habitat loss on biodiversity.

In “Ode to E.O.”, the door is a metaphor for the choices we face.  The promise of conservation is represented by the full-color images of the endangered species on the front panels of the door. The grim prospect of extinction is represented by the gray silhouettes on the back. On both sides the ants survive.

As an artist, I have always been drawn to forms and imagery from the natural world. In recent years, my work has been increasingly influenced by scientific themes. During the pandemic year, I was invited to participate in two projects relating to endangered species and making an outdoor piece for Go Outdoors Lexington seemed like the perfect next step.
