E.O. Wilson, the acclaimed biologist and naturalist, lived in Lexington. He grew up in Alabama in the 1930s, a soft-spoken southerner who spent his childhood outdoors observing nature. He became a world-renowned scientist at Harvard who studied ant colonies and insect behavior. He founded the field of sociobiology and has written extensively about the effects of habitat loss on biodiversity. In “Ode to E.O.”, the door is a metaphor for the choices we face. The promise of conservation is represented by the full-color images of the endangered species on the front panels of the door. The grim prospect of extinction is represented by the gray silhouettes on the back. On both sides the ants survive. |
